LILYDALE – No less than 1 678 students including 685 orphans from two schools, benefited from Vodacom food parcels in a bid to touch and change lives of the needy and disadvantaged people around the nation.

Vodacom continued honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela in the first year since he died. The schools are Mabarhule and Hlomani High schools.

The eyes of the learners from two schools in Bushbuckridge Municipality told of their need of food during the donation of food parcels last Thursday.

They also each received R2 airtime. “You cannot concentrate on your studies on an empty stomach. You need food to eat before you can learn and live. I want to take this opportunity to thank Vodacom for giving us food and adding hope to pursuing our studies,” said a grade 12 Mabarhule learner,” Doctor Nkuna.

Vodacom’s chief officer, Louisa van Beek said, “Vodacom supports the meaningful participation of its employees in volunteering activities and gives employees two days of paid leave to participate in them. For Mandela Day, Vodacom employees around the country were encouraged to give back 67 minutes of their time in honour of his legacy.”

Chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang said, “The Nelson Mandela foundation focuses on food security, literacy and shelter. Vodacom has ensured close alignment with these by focusing its volunteering initiatives on food security.

“It is pleasing to see that my learners are happy. I appreciate what Vodacom has done to help them go to bed with a full stomach. On behalf of my learners, I say thank you, Vodacom,” said Simon Sibuyi, Hlomani High principal.
