Gospel diva to minister at concert

She's passionate about music, charismatic, humble and loves ministering to people with her angelic voice.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – She’s passionate about music, charismatic, humble and loves ministering to people with her angelic voice.

Mabongi Mabaso, born and raised in Thulamahashe, started singing in primary school when she was only five and has never stopped.

Born into a family of music lovers, the nightingale says growing up in that environment, in which everyone, her sisters and uncles, would gather around and sing together, has honed her talent and strengthened her love for music.

“This helped me a lot as it exposed me to different kinds of music and that just made me love singing even more. My uncle helped me gain confidence because he used to take me to places where he was performing, and his being brilliant on stage kind of rubbed off on me,” she says.

The gospel diva finished a diploma in music and is currently doing a BTech in music and her main reason for studying it, she says, is so that she is able to profile God better, in excellence.

“My love for music has always been there, but by the time I hit grade 10, I knew I wanted to pursue music as a career and studying has played quite a significant role in my musical journey as it has helped my musical ear to develop even more. It has also enabled me to teach and impart this gift to others.”

Though her heart is set on gospel music, Mabongi sometimes features at some events as a jazz singer since she majored in the genre at varsity.

Her greatest fan and cousin, Faneriwile Mtileni, says her jazz performances are okay but he can’t sit down during Mabongi’s gospel renditions.

Mabongi released a 10-track CD titled Tshama in 2012 and early this year she won a Crown Gospel Best Jazz song award in Durban.

“Oh, what a feeling it was to hold that baby in my hands. I was really hoping to win it but when I was called onto the stage, with everyone watching, it felt like a dream. I was really humbled,” she adds.
