Women to be honoured in Water and Sanitation awards

Mpumalanga Province will be represented on two categories by women groups from Bushbuckridge and Nkomazi Local Municipalities in the Ehlanzeni District Municipalit

The Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane accompanied by Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete will officially announce the winners of the 2014 Women in Water Awards today at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg in the North West Province.

The Women in Water Awards initiative aims to honour women who participate actively in the water sector and contributes to the socio-economic development of the country. The programme serves as a vehicle for the Department to appreciate and recognise the good work done by women and the vital role they play in the water sector and their communities.

Awards will be represented in the following categories:

Water Conservation – The project supports the national objectives on water conservation and demand management. It also demonstrates the best, economic and simple ways of conserving water in the process of doing daily activities that contributes to poverty eradication.

Adopt a River – The purpose is to encourage communities not to pollute rivers. The project promotes innovative and sustainable solutions to water management and demonstrates greater women’s participation and involvement.

Education and Awareness – The project demonstrates clear water related awareness and education campaigns in communities;

Community Development – The project provides evidence of greater community involvement and development.

Mpumalanga Province will be represented on two categories by women groups from Bushbuckridge and Nkomazi Local Municipalities in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality.
Ikhwezi vegetable and poultry cooperative from Skhwahlane in Nkomazi Local Municipality will represent the province in the Community Dedvelopment category and Samkelisiwe Cooperative from Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality will be competing in the Adopt a River category.
