MBOMBELA – The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) has appointed the Mbombela-based, Cllr Mavis Charles to serve as the new provincial deputy chairperson for this structure.

Her appointment comes after the former Mbombela executive mayor, Ms Cathy Dlamini who previously served in the PEC as deputy chairperson, was deployed to national parliament in Cape Town, after the general elections in May.

Mpumalanga News has established that a report on the replacement of Dlamini was presented at the PEC meeting held on June 5, and it was resolved that the chairperson be mandated to consult the ANC on the replacement and brief the provincial office bearers on the outcomes of the consultation. Salga Mpumalanga’s Ms Gwen Ndashe has confirmed the appointment of Charles.

“A teleconference of the provincial office bearers was then held on June 18, where the chairperson briefed members that Cllr Mavis Charles has been recommended to be a PEC member and to serve as deputy chair of Salga Mpumalanga,” she said. “Her appointment came into effect as of June,” explained Ndashe.

On August 2 to 3, 2011, Salga Mpumalanga went to a provincial conference where 13 members were elected to serve in the PEC structure of this association, with one being the chairperson, three deputy chairpersons, six additional members and three co-opted members.

On September 2011 during the national conference, the then chairperson of the province Cllr Speedy Mashilo was elected to serve as a member of the National Executive Committee and as required by Salga’s constitution, when a PEC member is elected at a national level, he/she has to relinquish his/her position at provincial level as was the case with Mashilo.
