Illegal connections give municipalities sleepless nights

Illegal electricity connections well known as “Izinyoka” turns to be a normal part of life in some informal settlements in different municipalities in the province which includes Mbombela in areas such as Msholozi, Mhlumeni and Umjindi Local Municipality(ULM).

BARBERTON- Izinyoka comes to spotlight after Mpumalanga News covered different incidents where community members lost their love ones due to the illegal connections.

One of the areas that were visited by Mpumalanga News is Phola Park majority of the residents in that areas were using Izinyoka which put lives of pedestrians in danger which is something that led ULM to established a project of installing electricity meters in each and every household.

When the project was launched and the municipality send several stingy warnings it was believed that ULM will no longer have a sleepless night of illegal electricity connections.

The spokesperson of the municipality Mr Samuel Jele was previously quoted saying “We like to warn those people who are doing illegal electricity connection we are not going to play games will work together with police and will arrest them because what they are doing it’s against the law this is part of criminal activities and it’s costing the municipality a lot money .”

But it seems like the warning falls on deaf ears as this has been proven recently after a five year old boy lost her life at Extension 11 when she was playing with friends outside his home.

Speaking to this publication the spokesperson of the local police station Const Tutu Nkosi said “It’s very sad what happened to the child ,we are going to work together with our municipality in terms of running awareness where will be teaching people about the danger of illegal electricity connections and I like to urged parents to take care of their children ,making sure that they are always playing in a safe environment “she concluded.

Not so along a man lost his live at Mhlumeni estimated to his early 30’s lost his life while he was busy fixing a wire of illegal connections .
