The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ (Cogta), MEC Ms Refilwe Mtshweni has embarked on a visit to several water projects in the Nkomazi and Bushbuckridge municipalities.

In Nkomazi, Mtshweni visited Mangweni, Steenbok and Block C villages with the executive mayor, Cllr Thulisile Khoza and municipal officials accompanying her.
According to the department, water supply in these areas is hampered by illegal connections, misuse of water and leakages.

“Cogta and the Nkomazi Municipality are building a two-megalitre ground reservoir, as an intervention to improve water supply. A separate bulk line is being installed to transport water from the reservoir to the affected communities,” said Mtshweni.

She further added that a construction of a two-megalitre elevated tank is underway in Steenbok to provide for the local community.
In Bushbuckridge, the MEC visited the Cunningmore B, Casteel and Thusanang water projects accompanied by the executive mayor, Cllr Renius Khumalo, acting head of department, Mr Richard Mnisi and senior government and municipal officials.

During her visits, the MEC insisted that the projects should be completed by the end of July.
“We are a supporting pillar for municipalities to provide water. We are working hard to accelerate all water projects so that our people can have water.”

The MEC has also expressed concern about illegal connections, leakages and misuse of water which undermine government’s efforts to provide water to all communities. She urged residents to be patient.
