Pupils get a taste of life in media

MBOMBELA – As part of introducing young people to the working environment and supporting the campaign of “Take a girl child to work”, Mpumalanga News hosted 14 learners of Sidungeni High School in Luphisi who wanted to pursue careers in the media industry.

This was done in conjunction with Imbumba Foundation. They received an opportunity to learn more about how the print media works, from brainstorming sessions in the newsroom to the final product.
This campaign was an eye-opener as some of them indicated during interactions with journalists at this media house, that they were clueless or had no idea how to write a story.

One of the learners, Millicent Tila said, “Well, I feel honoured to be part of this campaign. I have learnt a lot, now I have an idea what journalism is all about and the information that I have learnt here, I’m going to share with my peers at school who have an interest in this field,” she concluded.

Speaking to this reporter, the editor of Mpumalanga News and Mirror, Bongani Hlatshwayo said, “This was a worthy encounter with the girls. We’ve reached an agreement to encourage them to write by offering them a page each month, whereby, aspiring journalists from the school will contribute articles about their school.

“As a company, we’re prepared to go the extra mile and introduce the girls to other careers within the media industry, for an example, our graphics design unit, will also offer lessons in graphic designing to the pupils. That’s a step in the right direction to expose them fully to the media industry,” he said.
