His dream is going down the drain

"I tried to give the Department of Home Affairs my birth certificate which I used to complete my matric exams, but it was a waste of time".

PIENAAR – “After all my hard work, dedication and commitment, it seems like my dreams are going down the drain. Even though I passed my matric with flying colours, I don’t see a brighter future”.
These were the words of Mfundo Masina (19) who matriculated at Bonginhlanhla High School last year. Masina has been struggling to obtain an identity document (ID).
Speaking to Mpumalanga News, he indicated that when he had applied for an ID in 2012, he received the shock of his life after he was told that his ID number had been duplicated.

“This was something I could not understand. I tried to give the Department of Home Affairs my birth certificate which I used to complete my matric exams, but it was a waste of time. It sends me from pillar to post. It’s hindering my bursary applications because I need to attach a copy of my ID, which I don’t have. I really need help,” he said.
This publication contacted the department to find out how it could assist Masina. According to the department, if a person faces this problem, in order to assist, he must visit the offices with a confirmation letter from the school and particulars of both parents.
