Intoxicated man found dead on toilet floor

On Friday, a 63-year-old man was found dead in a toilet following heavy drinking the night before.

ALEXANDRIA – On Friday, a 63-year-old man was found dead in a toilet following heavy drinking the night before. According to his daughter, who was still too traumatised to say much about the ordeal, he did not come home that night.

She said when she did not find him in his bedroom in the morning, she asked the neighbours if they had seen him and they told her he had been drinking at the local tavern.

She said when she went to the toilet, she found him lying on the floor with a bottle of beer next to him.

“At first I thought he was sleeping but when I tried to wake him up, I realised that he was dead. Imagine the shock of finding your own parent in that kind of situation,” she said tearfully.

This incident brings to three of the kind recently reported by Mpumalanga News, where senior citizens were found dead after heavy drinking.

Last month, another man was found in the toilet after his dog led neighbours to his body and last week, a 59-year-old woman drowned while crossing a river after a spending the whole day drinking. Both incidents occurred in the Bushbuckridge area.

The spokesman for health and social development, Mr Ronnie Masilela said the recent World Health Organisation report put South Africa in a negative light in terms of alcohol usage and abuse.

“We appeal strongly to citizens to drink responsibly or refrain from drinking at all. It is robbing us of lives on the roads, dismantle families. There is more to gain if we stop abusing alcohol and a lot to lose when we continue,” he stated.
