Illegal dumping site out of hand

Residents complain of illegal dumping sites at their area as it causes a health hazard to them.

KABOKWENI – An illegal dumping site poses a nightmare for the community of this area.

Some residents have called upon the Mbombela Local Municipality to take serious measures to address this matter.

According to them, they have been experiencing an unpleasant smell for an extremely long time.

Lately the stench has become worse as some of the people dump rotten food and dead animals.

When Mpumalanga News visited the area, it discovered numerous illegal dumping sites.

Some of the residents indicated they were no longer coping with the unpleasant stench.

Ms Nomalanga Dlamini said, “We are not coping with the situation because of the dumped rotten food, carcasses, used condoms and nappies.

“As a parent, I am worried about my children because some of them like to play at those sites and they are at high risk of contracting a disease.”

Dlamini said the municipality was not going to solve this matter overnight as its refuse trucks did not reach these areas which caused people to dump their garbage anywhere they pleased.

This problem was not affecting residents only, motorists said they were affected too.

Mr Sabelo Sibande said, “The illegal dumping sites are problematic because some of them are very close to the main road and our area is very dark.

“Sometimes at night or at dawn, you will find branches right in the middle of the road.”
Sibande stated, “The municipality needs to provide us with large waste bins in every section and monitor those dumping sites because it makes our environment look dirty and unhealthy.”
