MGANDUZWENI – Community members are always looking over their shoulders, living in fear because of criminal activities in this area.

According to Ms Petunia Masina, who boards a bus to and from work, a group of young man targets commuters who leave for work around 04:00 and those who come late from work.

She said that last week on Tuesday morning, a woman was raped on her way to the bus station. The woman, in her late 20’s was apparently walking with three older women when the criminals grabbed her and disappeared with her into the nearby bushes.

The other women then ran back to the village to alert her husband and when they they went back to the scene they found her tied with ropes and took her to the hospital where it was confirmed that she had been raped.

“What scares me now is that the perpetrators have not been found and that poses a threat to a number of women who travel to work alone,” said the frightened Masina.

Another worried resident, Ms Reginah Mbokodo said that the area needs serious police intervention because there were a number of criminal incidents happening there. She said if the police could do some kind of patrolling within the village, it would help bring down the criminal activities.

Local police have confirmed that the woman was raped and they are still searching for the suspects. They have asked the community to work hand in hand with them to fight crime in the area.
