Waterval Boven Protest follow-up

Residents of this town and that of Machadodorp jumped in to restore service delivery in their own towns after it had been disrupted by enraged eMakhazeni municpal workers last week.

WATERVAL BOVEN – On Thursday the labourers vandalised the municipal offices in Belfast by smashing the windows with rocks. According to Ms Amanda Botha, DA councillor in the area, the workers were unsatisfied because they had not received safety gear like special uniforms to perform their duties.

Machadodorp was left without power for up to 48 hours after the people had also damaged electrical structures. Private electricians Mr Dawie Schleisch and Mr Leon Calitz restored the elctricity, free of charge.

Mr Bertus Stander, a private resident, removed garbage bags from the old-age homes as it was posing a serious health threat. “There is still no service delivery and the situation has not changed since Thursday,” said Botha.

The workers were prepared to strike and disrupt services for six more weeks, until their demands were met.

“It is absolute chaos at this moment,” added the councillor. Lowvelder and Botha tried to obtain comment from the municipality, but there had been no answer at the offices since Friday.
