Cope welcomes Pule’s withdrawal

"We are disappointed, however, that it took a lot of public pressure and shaming before Ms Pule could see the writing on the wall."

MBOMBELA -The Congress of the People welcomes former Communications Minister Dina Pule’s withdrawal of her candidacy to stand as Member of Parliament.

According to the party’s President, Mr Mosiuoa Lekota: “Public representatives must show integrity and be accountable. We are disappointed, however, that it took a lot of public pressure and shaming before Ms Pule could see the writing on the wall.”

“In a democracy, where public representatives are expected to adhere to a higher standard of moral uprightness, a hint of impropriety should be enough for the public representative concerned to step aside until he or she has been cleared,” he added.

“What we have instead witnessed in this country are denials, followed by unbridled attacks on those who uncover misconduct.

“Cabinet ministers involved in the Nkandla debacle, for example, should long have fallen on their swords by now. Instead, they have attacked and attempted to discredit the messenger, the Office of the Public Protector,” said Lekota.

“Attacks on the Public Protector are short-sighted and show a shallow mindset: defending individuals at all costs, without any regard for the long-term consequences for our democracy, and the institutions that have been established to safeguard it,” he concluded.
