Gogo still struggling to obtain her ID

As a result, the gogo depends on handouts from her community to fend for her 16-member family, who mainly comprises her grandchildren.

MAGOGENI – “I’ve always heard people say they are voting because they want their rights to be heard, but I haven’t experienced that since 1994 because I’m struggling to get my ID,” lamented Ms Sidudla Mnisi (62) who said she wished to vote this year in honour of Tata Madiba.

“I believe that South Africa is a free country today because of him. Even when I question why I don’t have an ID, I don’t get any answers, but I’m urged to reapply,” she said sadly.

Mnisi, as a result, depends on handouts from her community to fend for her 16-member family, who mainly comprises her grandchildren. She appealed to leaders of the province to help her since she needed her ID to make ends meet.

“I’ve waited for years to get my ID, but I don’t get positive feedback. Every time home affairs says I must apply again. It really hurts me because I always waste the last of my money on these trips instead of feeding my grandchildren. Besides, I can’t even apply for an old-age grant,” she explained.

Mnisi had applied in Komatipoort and Tonga to no avail. She was the one who sang the praises of MEC for public works, Ms Dikeledi Mahlangu who recently donated a beautiful house to her family.

“I raised this problem with her, but nothing is happening. Home affairs is still sending me from pillar to post,” she concluded.
