Two teenagers sentenced to community service

Before passing the sentence, Du Plessis mentioned that the boys were very young to be sentenced to direct imprisonment.

NELSPRUIT – Two teenagers from KwaZulu Natal were sentenced to six months doing community service, including gardening and washing state vehicles under the supervison of correctional services officer.

They are also compelled to attend and complete life skill programs provided by the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro).

The two, Mr Nhlanhla Khumalo and Mr Thamsanqa Khumalo were arrested by security officers on their way out of the Edgars stores and the stolen cellphones were found in their possession.

“You are expected to report to this court on August 26 after serving your sentence,” said Magistrate Ms Christa Du Plessis of the Nelspruit District Court on February 26.

“We believe this sentence will help you learn something and be rehabilitated,” she added.

Before passing the sentence, Du Plessis mentioned that the boys were very young to be sentenced to direct imprisonment although they had spent a month in prison from the day they were arrested for stealing two expensive cellphones from Edgars.

Du Plessis added that she hoped the time the two accused in spent jail might had make them realise that they don’t belong in prison , hence a probation officer was asked to compile a report for community services.
