Rural schools supported by Autotec Foundation excel

The majority of learners from these schools come from child-headed families while some are orphans.

NELSPRUIT – Five rural high schools that have been under the care of the Autotec Foundation for the past four years continue to outshine even the best in the Mpumalanga.

The results produced by the learners from Khutsalani, Sakhile, Phatfwa, Lungisani and Khumbula high schools prove that your background does not determine your future.

The majority of learners from these schools come from child-headed families while some are orphans surviving on handouts from the community and the government grant.

“The schools have worked so hard to achieve such outstanding results. Some of the teachers camped at the schools with the learners in order to allow them enough time to study without the interruption of chores as is the case at home.

The educators were determined and willing to put in the extra time in order to help their learners reach their goals,” expressed Autotec Foundation chief operations officer, Jeannine Ferreira.

All the schools reached the 80 per cent mark in the 2013 matric results.

The results were:

Khutsalani High School – 97 per cent.

Sakhile High School – 94 per cent.

Phatfwa Secondary School – 91 per cent.

Lungisani High School – 85 per cent.

Khumbula High School – 82 per cent.

Ferreira added that Phatfwa surprised everyone with the pass rate which is a very big improvement compared to the 60 per cent in 2012. In 2012 Khumbula High School results dropped from 76,9 per cent in 2011 to 55,9 per cent in 2012 but they managed to pull 82 per cent out of the bag last year.

Note that only 25 schools in Mpumalanga managed to reach the 100 per cent matric pass rate in 2013. Prize-giving ceremonies will be hosted by the foundation in their schools to award certificates and trophies to the performing learners and educators.
