Rumours of water being poisoned in water reservoirs supplying the community of Kabokweni, KaNyamazane, Pienaar and surrounding areas made rounds this morning allegedly by Somalian nationals whom the community had been in clash with since the death of a 20-year-old schoolboy who was apparently shot by a Somalian businessman last week.

According to information aired by the local radio station people supposedly received Sms’s, twitter and Facebook messages alerting them about the alleged poisoning of water supplying the areas. As a result the community blockaded roads with burning tyres and debris at Oggo in Pienaar, e-One in Kanyamazane and the roads to Matsulu. No vehicle moved in or out of the areas apart from using alternative routes. Schools were also disturbed as some children did not go to school. W/O Andries Skwambane spokesperson of Kanyamazane police said roads were still closed by 08:45.

“Police had been watching over the area the whole night and the municipality had promised to supply waterkan to the community so long as they wait for the results of the tests,” he said. The latest incidents followed the looting of foreign nations businesses in Pienaar which spreads to Kanyamazane and other areas on Monday.

The mayor of Mbombela Cllr Cathy Dlamini also confirmed that she was alerted of the said message around 02:00 and she called the management of Silulumanzi to immediately do tests on the said areas. By 06:30 Dlamini said the municipality was still waiting for the test results to determine whether the water poisoned or not.

Silulumanzi circulated another SMS by 10:00 stating that there was no sign of water poising in the reservoirs.
