Hospital promotes awareness about STIs

A male and female condom demonstration was the focus of the event as many people are infected every day.

NELSPRUIT – Rob Ferreira officials and employees held a sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/Aids and reproductive health-awareness event on Wednesday.

A male and female condom demonstration was the focus of the event as many people are infected every day.

Sr Gloria Chiloane explained how to protect oneself against STIs when engaging in sexual activities.

Using a condom was the only way to remain safe from infections.

It was alleged that not only patients had been infected with HIV/Aids and other diseases, even the nurses were affected.

Chiloane said, “If your CD4 count is below 350, you are advised to take ARV pills for the rest of your life.”

She said with every person you get involved with, it was very important that you knew his/her status and yours too.

She added that nurses shouldn’t only test patients, they were advised to get

examined as well.

“The only problem that scares people from being tested is confidentiality.

Rob Ferreira employees have agreed to be tested and remain positive,” she said. Chiloane encouraged staff members to take medication if they were infected.

Every pregnant woman was advised to be examined for the sake of her unborn baby. Chiloane said those that were pregnant and positive could, however, breastfeed for a period of six weeks only.
