PIENAAR – A Somalian man is on the run after he allegedly shot and killed a high school learner. This is according to Mpumalanga police spokesman, Col Leonard Hlathi.

Hlati said police were looking for the man believed to be a foreigner who allegedly shot and killed a 20-year-old pupil of Mayibuye High School.

It was alleged that on Tuesday at approximately 07:30 he was on his way to school, when he walked past a shop owned by the Somalian and saw two schoolmates standing outside.

“The owner came out and an altercation ensued, in which he allegedly accused the learner of being part of a group that burgled his store. He then started assaulting the youngster,” he said.
Hlathi added that bystanders witnessed the incident and reported it to the police.

“According to preliminary reports, the argument started when the pupil drew a knife from his pocket, and that is when he was shot dead.” He said afterwards, the suspect fled before police arrived and have since been on the run.

“In this regard, we request anyone with information about this man to please contact WO Andrew Thwala on 013-794- 9397,” said Hlati. “It is regrettable that a young man had to lose his life in such a despicable manner. It goes without saying that the community might be outraged about the incident, nevertheless we are calling for peace and stability. Let us allow the necessary prescripts of the law to take their course,” said the provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Thulani Ntobela.
