Disabled swimmer makes strides in his fraternity

Having a disability didn’t limit one of the country’s most gifted swimmers of White River, Sibusiso Mogale who was born without hands, from reaching his goals. Mogale is making waves in the swimming world and has bagged many medals on national level and is still growing strong.

He is, however, unable to take his career further because of lack of funds or sponsorship. His other concern, is that he has gained recognition at national level but none here at home. “I’m proud to say my disability turned into a blessing.

I’m not saying I have accomplished everything I dreamt of because I believe I still have a long way to go.”

He has managed to put the province on the map after competing in numerous competitions at both national and international level, in Kimberly, Stellenbosch and Brazil to name but a few. “There are many I want to participate in but lack of funds limit me from taking part. I would like to appeal for more support from government and the private sector.”

He is now focusing on qualifying for the 2016 Paralympic Games. This is, however, not going to be an easy task since he has no financial backing. “I am physically and mentally strong and ready for the 2016 games, but the challenge that I’m facing now is that I don’t have a sponsor.”

He is currently using a public swimming pool in White River, which he says is not conducive to practising as one is easily distracted by the many people using it. “I am not going to stop, I am going to focus on my talent and continue to practise despite these challenges, until I get a sponsor because swimming is in my blood,” he said.

The video takes us on a journey of his life and the challenges he faces on a daily basis. View Sibusiso’s video here.
