A real sangoma does not kill, but rather saves lives

"I always advise patients with similar symptoms to consult with their doctors or go to the clinic," she said".

MSHOLOZI – A locally based traditional healer says a real sangoma heals the sick and does not kill people for their body parts or mutilate them.

Ms Alice Mahlalela, who has been a healer for the past couple of years, says her forefathers never taught her that body parts could be used as medicine.

According to her, a real sangoma who had been trained (kuthwasa) were taught not to kill, but to save lives.
“I don’t agree with so-called traditional healers who tell people to kill others for strong medicine, real ones don’t have to kill and perform certain rituals before entering the healing surgery (indumba).

If it happened that he/she was in contact with a dead person then they wouldn’t be able to work,” she said at Msholozi’s voting centre where she was to register with some of her trainees (emathwasana).

She hopes her vote will make a difference in bringing the much-needed services to the area including roads, water, electricity, schools to mention but a few.

Mahlalela added she wished the department of health could provide more seminars and workshops for traditional healers in the province so that they could be informed and educated on certain ailments and work with the department.

“As healers, we don’t murder for whatsoever reason, our mission is to restore life. We find the root cause of the problem and work on finding solutions on how we can heal or stop it,” she said.

The healer added that she could not heal HIV/Aids as others would claim. “I always advise patients with similar symptoms to consult with their doctors or go to the clinic,” she said.

One of her trainees Ms Mbali Manzini also called as Gogo Mahlathi, said she expects traditional healers to be  given rights to dig up medicine wherever they want to and train traditional  healers more often.
