Accused appears in court

Accused had already pleaded not guilty to murder

NELSPRUIT – A man who allegedly crushed his ex-wife with a truck appeared in court on a charge of murder. Mr Daniel Buti Mzimba (41) appeared in the Pretoria High Court in Nelspruit on Wednesday.

A doctor who was supposed to testify in the trial was delayed so proceedings had to be postponed for another day. The trial continues until today.

Mzimba had already pleaded not guilty to the murder of Ms Edith ‘Eddy’ Moyane (34). He remains in custody.

According to Lt Godfrey Mohale, spokesman for the Burgersfort police, he was arrested on February 16, 2012. “He was apprehended in the mountains in Ga Manoke at about midnight where he was hiding,”

he said.

On February 13, 2012, the suspect allegedly called his son to ask about victim’s location. He was told she was at Tubatse Primary School where she worked as a cook.

Mzimba, who was driving a furniture truck, allegedly drove past the school gates, damaging it in the process, and drove over Moyane’s feet.

He apparently aimed the vehicle at the victim again, who was by then in a seated position near a kitchen wall.

He allegedly pushed her with the front of the lorry against the wall, then reversed and drove into her again, knocking her against the wall which then collapsed.

Moyane sustained severe head injuries and Mzimba fled on foot. She was pronounced dead on the scene. She died of multiple blunt-force injuries. According to the charge sheet, he was also charged with malicious damage to property and robbery.

He was also alleged to have attacked his ex-wife and her two sisters and robbed them on December 23, 2011.
