Young beauties are role models

NELSPRUIT – They have big shoes to fill, the 12 finalists of the fourth instalment of Miss Mpumalanga admitted at a special media event on Saturday at Cappello. They all lauded the current queen, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, as an exceptional role model. Gugu Khoza of the Mpumalanga Gambling Board, which is a co-sponsor in conjunction with Mzimari Productions, reminded the young women that it was their responsibility as role models to inform the youth about responsible gambling.

Representing several municipal areas, they displayed poise and savvy in the way they fielded the sometimes difficult questions posed by media representatives. Asked what they thought the most pressing social problems in their communities were, most, like Thando Matsiye of Bushbuckridge, said teen pregnancy and drug abuse was thwarting the youth’s future.

“Young people lack ambition, and without it you are not motivated to create a better future for yourself, your community and your family,” said Amanda Jele, representing Thaba Chweu Municipality.

However, this is not the case with Valencia Bouwer, who told the audience that she plans on writing a book entitled Value Yourself, aimed at young girls.

Other topics raised included the lack of interest in education among the youth, the economic struggle they face, the importance of a positive attitude, abstinance and curbing the spread of HIV/Aids, and the value of beauty pageants as a tool to empower communities. It seems that the final selection will be all the more difficult for the judges. The crowning of Miss Mpumalanga 2014 will take place at the Emnotweni Arena on April 12.
