IDT to reduce poverty through EPWP

In order to be eligible to participate, NPO's should submit proposals proving that the entities have registered with relevant authority and are in good standing.

NELSPRUIT -In a bid to reduce unemployment, develop communities and alleviate poverty, the Independent Development Trust(IDT) has once again invited Non Profit Organisations(NPO) to submit proposals in order to participate in the Expanded Public Works Programme(EPWP).

Addressing representatives of local NPO’s, programme manager, Dr Sabina Mahapa said that only suitably qualified organisations working on community development programmes would be considered for the programme.

Selected NPO’s will be appointed on a renewable contract for three years from April 12014 to March 30 2017. Mahapa said that in this period they would be expected to create work opportunities for unemployed and impoverished individuals in their respective communities.

“These programmes must be labour intensive and cannot be implemented for profit making organisations. They are aimed at improving and developing communities.

In order to be eligible to participate, NPO’s should submit proposals proving that the entities have registered with relevant authority and are in good standing.

Members of organisations who did not meet the requirements last year pleaded with the IDT to advice them on where they went wrong so that they do not repeat the same mistake this year.

Mahapa advised them to follow the instruction, produce all necessary documentation and ensure that they are viable when sending their proposals.

The EPWP was launched in 2009 and has improved communities livelihood, creating more than 5 000 jobs in the 2013/14 financial year.

According to Ms Shantel Bunting, public works’ national youth service manager, a particular project they has been supporting since inception consisted of 250 disabled individuals stood out in the country.

Interested parties can submit their proposals at the IDT offices by Friday January 31. Proposal guides can be found on the IDT website www.idt.org.za

IDT is a non state sector contracted by the Department of Public Works Roads and Transport focusing on supporting organisations developing communities.
