2010 FIFA World Cup Trust scam going viral

A recent attempt by perpetrators hungry for devouring people's hard-earned money is circulating at the moment, claiming to be from 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust (FWCLT).

NELSPRUIT – During this month, referred by others as Janu-Worry, it is easy to fall prey for scams going around inviting individuals to claim money they have been randomly selected to win.

A recent attempt by perpetrators hungry for devouring people’s hard-earned money is circulating at the moment, claiming to be from 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust (FWCLT).

A number of e-mail account holders have received a message that reads: “We are pleased to announce to you as one of the lucky beneficiaries selected for the ongoing FIFA 2010 World Cup Legacy Trust for South Africa and the African Continent.

All Beneficiaries addresses were randomly selected from a batch of 40,000 emails. Your email address emerged alongside others as a 3rd category of The FIFA 2010 World Cup Legacy Trust, you have therefore been approved for a total payout of Two Hundred & Fifty Thousand Rand (R250, 000 . 00).”

The message further invites “beneficiaries” to fill a claim form provided or to phone a certain Ms Lindiwe in order for their claim to be processed.

The trust has labelled this as a desperate measure calculated to extract money from desperate people who can do anything to fix their financial woes.

“It is a scam and we urge people to exercise wisdom regarding such issues. How does one win a competition they never entered for or qualify for a claim they never applied for?” said Mr Themba Mathwasa, FWCLT’s administration officer.

Mathwasa said that the trust awards bursaries, not cash, to individuals who have applied and funding to certain organisations.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust is an entity established by FIFA and the South African Football Association (SAFA) at the end of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to promote and extend the development and the reach of the game of football within South Africa. It has to address critical gaps in Football development in all provinces of the Republic. In addition it has to support education and healthcare initiatives of NGO’s who use football as a vehicle for community development as well as for humanitarian assistance for those in historically disadvantaged and impoverished communities.
