Death of chief – a huge shock

Mnisi was found hanging from a tree, suggesting that he might have committed suicide.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – The provincial House of Traditional Leaders and the Mnisi tribal homestead have been dealt a heavy blow following the death of Chief Mnisi.

Mnisi was found hanging from a tree, suggesting that he might have committed suicide.

Even though there hasn’t been a formal report on his death, information in Mpumalanga News’ possession suggests that there might have been some family disputes. His family declined to comment.

The chairman, Kgoshi Lameck Mothupi Mokoena, said Mnisi’s sudden passing not only left a huge void in the hearts of his family and friends, but in that of the entire traditional house of leaders as well.

“It’s a sad day for us because we have lost a true soldier who preached community development and unity between government and traditional leaders. We can only learn from his teachings and contributions to create safer communities. We want to assure his family and all his loved ones that we are with them in these painful times,” said Mokoena.

He said what was even more saddening was the manner in which Mnisi died. “We are not God and we therefore cannot say how people should die, but our hearts are filled with sadness. We have so many questions, but I guess it’s too late now.”

Since taking charge, Mokoena has successfully transformed the house into a progressive and transparent institution with direction and purpose. And also, under the leadership of the premier Mr David Mabuza, the traditional leaders started getting the respect they deserve from government and communities. There have since been smooth working relations between traditional leaders and government.

Mnisi will be laid to rest on Saturday.
