ANC veteran gets the highest honour

Mompati was honoured together with Ms Gertrude Shope who was awarded Isithwalandwe in absentia.

MBOMBELA – One of the country’s female struggle heroins and ANC veteran has received the highest honour bestowed by the party, Isithwalandwe.

Ms Ruth Mompati, who boasts a membership of more than 50 years, was recognised during the ruling party’s 102 birthday celebrations which coincided with the launch of the election manifesto.

Mompati was honoured together with Ms Gertrude Shope who was awarded Isithwalandwe in absentia.

The award is given by the ANC to members who have made an outstanding contribution and sacrifice to the liberation struggle.

“This was traditionally bestowed only on the bravest warriors of the people, and on those who distinguished themselves in the eyes of all the people for exceptional qualities of leadership and heroism,” said Mr Jacob Zuma ahead of awarding Mompati and Shope.

He added that the party was proud to confer Isithwalandwe on two of the its longest serving and most outstanding members.
