Patient irate about negligence at hospital

This comes after Mr Sonnyboy Mkhonza allegedly got stitches despite shards of bottles not being removed from the wound he sustained.

MBOMBELA – A patient of one of the local hospitals is considering taking legal action against the health department for negligence.

This comes after Mr Sonnyboy Mkhonza allegedly got stitches despite shards of bottles not being removed from the wound he sustained.

Mkhonza told Mpumalanga News this week that his ordeal started after he was involved in an accident on December 25.

He added that ahead of going to the Standerton Hospital, he called an ambulance at about 23:30 but it never arrived.

“I went to the hospital the following morning and explained to a doctor what had happened. He gave me an injection and stitched me up. Afterwards there was pain in my wound, which resulted in me going to another hospital in Krugersdorp.”

Mkhonza indicated that upon arriving at the hospital he asked for an X-ray after explaining his situation, but was only given painkillers.

“What happens to a doctor who stitches someone and leaves bottles in a wound? What can I do?” he asked.

“I am sitting with shards of glass in my body as we speak.”

The department’s spokesperson in the province, Mr Ronnie Masilela told this paper that the department is taking the allegations very seriously and is investigating.

“As a matter of principle, we want people to continue getting the best medical care at our facilities. We have not deviated from our mandate of delivering quality health-care services to the people of Mpumalanga.”
