Local matrics elated about their results

KANYAMAZANE – The matric class of 2013 in South Africa performed exceptionally well as announced by the minister of education, Ms Angie Motshekga. Schools around the province also did well.

Mpumalanga News also visited a number of schools around Mngwenya and Skhulile Circuit to feel the vibe and as expected, the former high school learners were seen hugging and congratulating their peers for work well done.

Although the results showed a significant improvement compared to previous years, it also showed a paradigm shift in the positions of top schools in the Mngwenya Circuit. The top school was Sidungeni Secondary from the deep rural area of Mpakeni. Sidungeni had 54 candidates who obtained 18 bachelors and an overall 98,1%.

Thembeka Secondary School in KaNyamazane broke the record and achieved an overwhelming 94, 7% with 37 bachelors. The school had 95 candidates.

Lekazi Central with its 158 candidates was in the third position and obtained 60 bachelors and an overall 92% pass rate. Khaliphani High School came fourth with a 91% pass rate and 42 bachelors.

The school with the highest number of candidates in the circuit this year was Sitintile Secondary School with 224 and it obtained the highest number of bachelors in the circuit as a whole. The school obtained 101 bachelors and an overall passrate of 85,6% which showed a 4,6% increase from the previous year’s 81%.

When this journalist asked Sitintile’s principal as to how they managed to obtain such a significant number of distinctions with such a massive class, Mr Harold Gondwe said, “I’m happy that our results has increased from 81% and the quality is also satisfactory although we are not happy with the quantity. We had been able to achieve this because we had good quality teachers who were always prepared to go an extra mile in assisting learners,”.

Gondwe added that his school was looking forward to a better mark in the 2014 matric exam with the implementing of the Continuous Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

“This year’s matrics will be the first to write the CAPS exams and I’m quite sure that we will go beyond 90 per cent,” he said. He believed that the 134 matric learners in the school this year will be much more manageable as compared to the previous 224 learners.

The worst performing school in the circuit was Mayibuye Secondary which only obtained 14 bachelors from its 162 candidates and overly pass rate of only 50,9%.

Top five schools from Sikhulile Circuit were as follows:

Sabane Secondary School achieved an overall pass rate of 93,8 per cent from its 48 candidates, followed by Sicelosethu Secondary with a 91,4 per cent pass rate from its 35 candidates. Lihawu Secondary School came third with overall

84 per cent pass rate from its 151 candidates, followed by EJ Singwane School which achieved 79,3 per cent pass rate from its 112 candidates and Hillaria Mthethwa obtained the fifth position with its 77 per cent pass rate from 170 candidates.

The worst performing school in Sikhulile Circuit was Gedlembane Secondary School which obtained only 49,3 per cent pass rate from its 151 candidates.

This school made headlines last year with the ongoing scuffle between the school and the parents of nearby Somcuba Primary School over the transfer of the current principal to Gedlembane.
