KABOKWENI – Three suspects appeared in the local Magistrate’s Court today on charges of unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition and dangerous weapons.
Messrs Mzwakhe Nunu Matsane (20), Thembelani Mawala Shaba (23) and Sifiso Gege Mgiba (31) were arrested by Hazyview police yesterday in the Sandriver Trust. Police had received information about a white Toyota Tazz suspected of carrying firearms. The vehicle was located and searched. A 303 rifle was found hidden in the engine compartment. An axe, hack-saw, two butcher knives, a pair of binoculars and ammunition were recovered from the boot of the vehicle.
The rifle will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in other crimes. The suspects were remanded in custody until Monday, pending a formal bail application.
