Girls urged to abstain

Girls urged to refrain from sexual activies and focus on making a better future for themselves and tgheir families.

MAKOKO – The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) set out to warn young women about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases and encouraged them to abstain from being sexually active.

According to Cllr Rhoda Mgwenya, she said the ANCWL had taken the initiative to teach them the importance of being women in society. This came after they saw that the number of young girls who became pregnant at a young age, had increased.

“We have learnt that most of them spend their nights at taverns.

It is important that we keep the future leaders of our country busy with sport and other activities that will keep them away from sex,” she said.

What worries the Ward 37B ANCWL is that most of the girls who have become mothers, have dropped out of school, and come from poor families.

“We want to see a better future for each one of you. We want to see you prosper in your lives and be better people so that you can help your families,” she explained.

The initiative will carry on and the women will also be taught life skills and sport.

Speaking to Bongeka Mgwenya, she said as young girls they felt privileged that there were still people who cared for them. “We feel that it is a good thing that we are keeping busy with sport, and in that way, we will not be involved in illegal activities and issues that can affect our future adversely,” she said.

She also added that they aimed to motivate other young girls to do the same so there could be change in their community.

The girls bet with a netball team from Numbi, but they ended up cancelling the game because of misunderstandings they had, which led to a quarrel.

The young women were also encouraged to register to vote in next year’s elections.
