Policeman apparently commits suicide after shooting colleague

The warrant officer took his service pistol out of a safe. A shot went off and his colleague was wounded in the stomach

NELSPRUIT – A warrant officer allegedly committed suicide after shooting his colleague in the stomach on Sunday. The incident happened at the MRTT Hotel Academy near KaNyamazane at about 17:00.

According to provincial police spokesman Brig Selvy Mohlala, the warrant officer and a lieutenant were sharing a room. They were both members of the SAPS’ visible policing unit. “The warrant officer took his service pistol out of a safe. A shot went off and his colleague was wounded in the stomach. Our investigation indicates that the latter then turned the weapon on himself,” said Mohlala.

The lieutenant was taken to Mediclinic Nelspruit. According to Mohlala, his condition was serious, but they were hopeful that he would make a full recovery. He could not divulge their particulars as they were still in the process of notifying their next of kin.
