Accident claims 29 lives

Today, Shongwe’s department will meet with a variety of stakeholders and the families of the deceased to determine how the families can be assisted.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has sent condolences to the families of 29 people who have died in an accident that happened last night [11 November 2013] around 20h00 on Moloto Road (R573 near Vlaklaagte 1 towards Kwaggafontein.

The accident occurred when an articulated truck drove into the back of a tipper truck before colliding with a bus and a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) which were both coming from Pretoria. Eight people were critically injured while twenty people were slightly injured and they were all rushed to KwaMhlanga and Dennilton Hospitals. It is believed that most of those who perished in the accident were from Matshiding Village near Siyabuswa in Dr. JS Moroka Municipality.

 

MEC Shongwe, who visited the scene early this morning, indicated that the crash should be treated as a disaster as it claimed many lives. He has further wished those who were injured a speedy recovery’,

“We are grieving as a province with the loss of innocent lives. While we approach the festive season, we want to assure our communities that law enforcement and road safety education will be enhanced to save people’s lives,” said Shongwe.
