Train-truck accident case resumes tomorrow

Mandlazi briefly appeared in the same court on Monday but the matter was postponed due to the defence lawyer not being ready to commence.

MBOMBELA – The court case against a truck driver accused of killing 25 people when his truck collided with a train last year continues in the Nelspruit High Court on Wednesday.

Mr George Mandlazi (42) faces 25 counts of murder.

Mandlazi briefly appeared in the same court on Monday but the matter was postponed due to the defence lawyer not being ready to commence.

Mandlazi’s truck ploughed into a coal train in Hectorspruit near Malalane on July 13, 2012. This led to the death of over two dozen seasonal orange pickers. He had pleaded not guilty and previously told the court that his actions were not premeditated. Mandlazi said he couldn’t remember precisely how the accident occurred. He is currently out on R3 000 bail.
