BARBERTON – As we are approaching the 16 days of activism against women and child abuse, rape seems to be a normal part of life in the province.

Local police are working tirelessly to ensure that such incidents decrease as they established a project called Siyahlomisana which is aimed to reach out to children.

Speaking to Mpumalanga News, the spokesperson for the local police in the area, Constable Tutu Nkosi said that: “At this stage we are targeting primary schools, but as time goes on, we will also visit high schools. This programme will run until November 15.”

She added that the initiative was not all about addressing rape issues, but it also had other activities that are part of the project.

Nkosi indicated that it is important to talk to children in an effort to make them aware about the abuse and as a result some of them can be victims of abuse.

Recently, a man who claimed to be gay (AngelPhokane ) was sentenced to 60 years in jail after being found guilty on different charges of raping school children. Another rapist, Mduduzi Tibane was found guilty on different charges of rape that he committed in various areas such as Kabokweni, Pienaar, Low’s Creek and Matsulu.
