KANYAMAZANE – The driver of a motorbike died on impact following a head-on collision.
This comes amid the driver’s motorbike collission with a bakkie.
The accident happened on the main road to Kanyamazane near MRRT on Thursday around 17:15 and the deceased’s body lied covered on the road for more than an hour.
He was certified dead on the scene by EMS officials who said he died of impact and had fractures on his head, chest and hands.
Traffic was congested to one lane as the scene remained closed. Surprisingly, police on site from KaNyamazane police station denied members of the media the right to take photos of the scene, besides the fact that this journalist introduced herself and showed her press card to the officer who was in charge, a Sgt Malele.
‘No, no, no you are not allowed to take pictures of the scene not unless the deceased’s family and our photographer arrived,’ said Sgt Malele.
She added by saying that the deceased was a prominent member of the public and a member of the ANC.
She and other members forced the journalist to delete pictures of the scene from her camera, one of the officials even threatened to grab the camera from the journalist to delete the pictures himself.
Other officers on the site argued about this and also asked whether journalists were allowed to do their work on public roads or not.
The driver’s family also arrived to identify the deceased’s body on the scene.
The press was only allowed to take pictures after the arrival of Kanyamazane police communications officer, W/O Andries Skwambane, who explained to the other officials that taking pictures on the scene was not a crime.
He added that what’s regarded as unethical is revealing the gruesome pictures of the deceased in the media and his/her identity without the knowledge of the family.
