Mother arrested for allegedly beating son to death

According to the post-mortem results, the boy sustained internal injuries which caused his death.

BARBERTON – A 20-year-old woman who is accused of beating her five-year-old son to death in Greyville, is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on November 18 on charges of murder.

It is alleged that the mother beat the child in a cruel manner, while she claimed that she was disciplining him.

But residents said the manner in which she assaulted the child, was an act of abuse.

A resident who didn’t want to reveal her name, said, “As Africans, we have a phrase ‘Ligotjwa lisemanti’ (which means you start to discipline a kid at an early age), but what the woman did is horrible.

“This woman doesn’t deserve to receive bail, end of story. She must rot in jail. How can you kill your own flesh and blood,”she exclaimed.

According to the post-mortem results, the boy sustained internal injuries which caused his death.

Spokesperson for the Barberton SAPS, Const Tutu Nkosi, confirmed the results and said the mother was in custody since she was expected to appear in court for a bail application.

“This is a very disturbing incident that we have come across. It’s not clear what really happened because she is not explaining herself clearly as to what led her to beat him but it’s clear that the mother assaulted the child in a very bad way. I hope that justice will play its role,” she explained.

The alleged killing of children by their parents seems to be a normal part of our lives these days. Three weeks ago, a couple were arrested in connection with the murder of their month-old baby girl and it’s supposed that they buried the body in a shallow grave next to a stream between Halfway and Bhuga near KaBokweni.

Currently, police are looking for information that could lead to the arrest of suspect(s) responsible for the death of a five-year-old girl. Information revealed that the little girl went missing on Sunday at about 16:00 after she went to the toilet.

According to police, she was found dead 100m away from her parents’ home in a house in Extension 2, Sakhile near Standerton on Monday at 06:00.

The owner of the house was allegedly going to the toilet when she spotted the body in her yard and alerted the police.

A case of murder is being investigated and no arrests have been made.

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The police have requested any person with information to contact Capt Mahlomola Moloi on 082-499-7390/ 013-714-7888.
