Mahlangu delivers on Transport Month

Mahlangu and her entourage patched potholes at the nearby Lembedi Street along the Elukhanyisweni High School and Khayalethu Combined School.

The MEC for the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dikeledi Mahlangu kept her promise made during her Policy and Budget Speech earlier this year that the Department will improve the condition of the roads in the province.

This was proven during the handing over a D1398 road from Arnot Power Station to Hendrina at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality October 24, 2013. The event was followed by the patching of potholes at Lynnville Emalahleni Local Municipality and donation of ten computers to Izodela Community Development Centre.

Mahlangu kick-started her journey of service delivery at Hendrina where she opened the R201.1 million roads at Hendrina in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The project opened job opportunities to at least 191 community members.

The entourage proceeded to Lynville at Emalahleni Municipality where she patched potholes and donated computers. During her address at the event, Mahlangu reiterated her stance about improving the condition of the roads in the province. “As we continue to improve the condition of the roads today, we promise to do more in order to ensure the safety of motorists and provide quality roads infrastructure in the province. We are aware of the bad conditions of the road, but we promise to continue to work together with the municipality to improve the state of the road, despite the limited budget at our disposal”, she explained.

Furthermore, a donation of ten computers was made to Izodela Community Development Centre. The computers came from a good Samaritan. The centre was established fourteen years ago, in a bid to improve the education and wellbeing of youth in the area through art and technology.

When receiving the computers, the Managing Director of the centre, Mr Dan Ndlovu was excited that the Department came to their rescue as they were desperately in need of computers so that they can educate the learners with the computer literacy skills. “We have a computer lab where we teach our students computer lessons, but the computers are old and malfunctioning which made it difficult for the learners to learn. So we truly appreciate the donation, as it will improve our situation” he stressed.

One of the students at the centre, Ms Siphiwe Vilakazi is doing Marketing in Arts. She expressed her joy over the new computers. “We were desperately looking for computers in our class, as some of the old computers were not working, but that will soon change. The new computers will help us a lot in our studies,” she smiled. The centre was established fourteen years ago, aimed to empower youth in the area with art and technology.
