Poultry farmers elective conference

The Developing Poultry Farmers Organisation will hold its elective congress in the province on October 29.

The Developing Poultry Farmers Organisation Elective Congress will be held at
the Orion Promenade Hotel in Nelspruit on October 29, 2013.
The DPFO  (Developing Poultry Farmers Organisation) will be holding its Elective Congress  to elect a governing body to represent the organisation in the province.
This means that for the first time black poultry farmers and poultry producers will
have a united voice to speed up their participation in the poultry value chain.
Amongst other issues, the DPFO will be engaging with government to assist with
the success of the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP 2030).

The DPFO is also  contributing to the debate regarding imports by engaging with stakeholders such  as government; the DTI in particular; commercial companies responsible for the imports, and the commercial poultry producers.
DPFO Coordinator, Mr Moses  Modise, who heads up the organisation, says the Elective Conference is a  significant development and it is happening in all provinces:

“Black poultry  farmers have a vital role to play to assist in poverty alleviation and economic  empowerment, especially in the rural areas. The DPFO’s role is critical in that  it is organising black farmers into a cohesive unit with one voice, especially
during engagements with government and other key stakeholders.”
“Already our  engagement with government has led to the Gauteng Province setting aside R40m in  funding for poultry farmers in the north of the province. The funds will be used  to upscale existing production to enable farmers to tap into previously
inaccessible markets, e.g. slaughtered chickens through abattoirs.”
“Another
key mandate of the DPFO is to ensure that there is transformation in the poultry
industry and that it addresses the core issues of levelling the playing field
and brings about real change for black farmers.”
DPFO plays a “capacity
building and advocacy role by mobilizing resources available through government
and the donor community.”

Mr  Modise works with nine provincial representatives  who are emerging farmers and nine government officials from each province who  play an advisory role.
“Our aim is to be the organization of choice for all  emerging SA poultry farmers”.

“The Developing Poultry Farmers Organisation  (DPFO) was established as a division of the South African Poultry Association  (SAPA). Its vision is to facilitate the entry of emerging poultry farmers,  especially those from previously disadvantaged communities into the main-stream  agricultural economy.

“To this end we seek to provide emerging poultry farmers  with the resources necessary for managing successful farming enterprises.”
