Four escape death during accident

Traffic officials and paramedics were quickly summoned to the scene and managed to save lives.

MANGWENI – Four people cheated death on Saturday morning after the car they were travelling in overturned and coughed them out.

This accident, which left an elderly woman in a critical condition, has left this small community in a state of shock, with a small portion already calling for speed humps to be installed on this busy main road.

“This is one of the busiest roads around and cars drive too fast here, especially taxis and yet there are no street humps,” said one woman at the scene of this accident.

The community claimed to have witnessed quite a number of accidents on this road and most agree that speed humps and regular traffic officials’ presence will help curb speeding and decrease the number of accidents, especially fatal ones.

According to bystanders who claimed to have witnessed the accident, said the bakkie lost control after its driver tried to overtake another vehicle.

“As he was overtaking another vehicle, a taxi approached from the opposite direction and he tried to avoid, but it was too late,” said a bystander.

“The next thing we saw was the bakkie rolling into the other side of the road, and bodies lying all over the place.”

Traffic officials and paramedics were quickly summoned to the scene and managed to save lives.

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Mr Vusi shongwe had earlier stressed the need for government to hire the services of counselors to offer much needed counseling to the membersof the police and the paramedics who deal with accidents, especially fatal ones.

“…because, some of these accidents are so horrific and these people are the ones who have to clean up the mess, which leaves them traumatised.”

He also said that such accidents do not only rob families of their loved ones but also causing government to lose billions of Rands, which could be channeled to service delivery.
