Legislature goes to the people

The ruling party said in their speech that there are still issues that still need their attention even though they are delaying but, they have managed to prioritise education, health, housing, and rural development.

Taking legislature to the people lured many residents of ‘Thembisile Hani Local Municipality.

The week-long initiative was part of the legislature’s executive oversight visit. The programme started on a Monday where members of the legislature did their political work. The number of people gathering in the taking the legislature to the people public hearings increased every day.

This was evident that people have a lot of issues to discuss with the assembly that affects them as a community. Community members have raised issues affecting them to the two different clusters, the social on Tuesday and on Thursday they raised their concerns over the economical cluster.

According to Gogo Anna Masango, since taking the legislature to the people have visited the area, not much has changed, “the issues we raised the last time the assembly was here are still existing. We hope this time they will keep to their promises and do what we as the community ask for.”

Day three of the programme was oversight visits from the two clusters. The KwaMhlanga hospital was one of the places visited as there were many reports from that were brought to the legislature, and the Charity Community care centre which did not receive funding from the department of Social Development for almost two years.

“Since our introduction to this programme the lives of the people of this municipality have started to slowly, but surely improved for the better,” said MEC for health and Social Development, Ms Candith Mashego Dlamini. She also added that through CRPD, the municipality has manged to create 356 jobs, and she is convinced that the figure will increase.

Many young people did not understand the whole concept of the legislature. Speaking to Themba Makua (27) he said he had no idea what was the legislature all about, but all he knows what that the government has come to them to hear their concerns, and he said by presenting their concerns, maybe they can also be able to get jobs from the projects that will be implemented in the municipality.

“Being here today means there might be changes to this still developing area,” he said.

Day four of the programmes the cabinet debated on heritage day, the ANC and DA defined what heritage meant to them, and COPE have not been seen in the legislature participation. The departments have implemented projects that will assist the community of Thembisile Hani local municipality, Department of agriculture and Economic Development, environment tourism has pinned co-operatives to work together as a team and record progress in the projects funded by the departments because the departments invest a lot of money in these projects. Mashego urged the community to pay their services, so they can be able to build their municipality.
