Filth a nightmare for community

The residents also complained of blocked and unattended drains in the streets.

TEKWANE SOUTH – The residents of Honeybird are not happy about unoccupied stands and dirty streets in their section.

Honeybird dwellers, who preferred to speak anonymously, claimed that the area between stands 113 and 114, which had become a dumping site and a hideout for criminals, had been left unattended.

Rumours are that the area had been reserved for a crèche.

“We had been told for ages that the place was for the building of a crèche and we are tired of this because there has been no development for more than 10 years now,” they said.

Residents who live close to the site alleged that they could hardly sit outside their houses because of the bad odour. “It is also full of rodents, cockroaches and flies,” they said.

They alleged that criminals use the place as a hideout. “We have reported this matter several times to our councillor during community meetings, but we have received no positive response, instead some members of the community use it to dump debris, dead dogs and rubbish, yet it is just four metres away from houses here,” added a resident who also preferred not to be named.

“We are afraid of finding newborns dumped here,” they said.

The community said a member who previously cleared the site three times with the aim of starting a small business, was instructed to leave the area. They also complained of bad internal road conditions.

“The municipal workers who come here to grade it, always leave it worse off than before,” they said.

The residents also complained of blocked and unattended drains in the streets.

Mr Freddy Ngobe, spokesman for human settlement said the Mpumalanga Provincial Government has established a technical task team comprising the representatives from the departments of human settlements, cooperative governance and traditional affairs, Mbombela Local Municipality and representatives from the community. The team will look at all the issues of Tekwane South, including that of the alleged illegal sale of RDP houses which saw the community blockading roads with burning tyres and debris on Monday morning.
