Govan Mbeki plants trees to celebrate Arbor Day

The occasion was graced by the MEC Ms Violet Siwela and members of the mayoral committee, councillors and other important stakeholders.

The Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Administration, hosted this year’s Arbor Week as part of celebrating this day in Ext 10, eMbalenhle.

The occasion was graced by the MEC Ms Violet Siwela and members of the mayoral committee, councillors and other important stakeholders.

“We would like to express our thanks at the welcome reception we have received from the municipality. We have decided to use this celebration of Arbor Week in order to plant trees, promote and create a better life for all,” said Siwela.

Arbor Month provides communities with the opportunity to raise awareness of South Africa’s urban greening initiatives and encourages all communities and businesses to participate in these activities. The youth have also been encouraged to participate in tree-planting and related environmental education programmes.

Eight trees were planted int Ext 10 eMbalenhle at specific houses by the MEC and members of the mayoral committee and ward councillors.
