Learners found with dagga

Cops seize drugs during school raid.

KANYAMAZANE – Match boxes filled with dagga as well bottles of liquor were recently confiscated by police at a local high school.

Police from the local station recently raided Khaliphani High School after they had received numerous complaints about learners who disturbed classes because of being under the influence of drugs and liquor. Dagga pressed in match boxes as well as liquor was retrieved from some learners.
According to WO Andries Skwambane, spokesman for the local police, the learners were taken to the police station where they were questioned at length on how they had obtained the drugs.

“They showed police where they had bought the drugs and a woman in her early 40s was arrested for dealing in dagga. She is currently out on R500 bail,” he said.

This newspaper also learnt that a learner assulted a teacher in class and when the teacher attempted to close the door to prevent him from entering because he was late.

WO Andries Skwambane urges principals of local schools to cooperate with police in an attempt to reduce criminal activities at schools. In the past few months the police had conducted crime awareness campaigns on the dangers of drugs, alcohol and substance abuse at various high schools in the area, including Khaliphani, ZB Kunene and Thembeka.

In another incident two suspects, aged 25 and 36, were arrested for the possession of counterfeit cigarettes. The incident happened on July 31 when police were tipped off about a suspicious looking load in a local taxi at Gugu Centre in KaNyamazane.

“Police then followed the taxi to Entokozweni where it was pulled over. Two males were found in possession of counterfeit cigarettes with a street value of R5 000. They were arrested and the cigarettes confiscated,” said Skwambane.

He also thanked members of the community for working hand in hand with police.

“We are very proud of our community because they are fully involved in the fight against crime,” he said.

In yet another case, police are looking for the whereabouts of three houserobbery suspects who recently attacked a 29-year-old woman in her home after gaining entry through a window.

“Two of them were wearing balaclavas; they held the woman at gunpoint and robbed her of laptops and an undisclosed amount of money.

The victim was not injured,” said Skwambane.
Six cases of house burglaries had also been reported to the station during the weekend of August 9 to 11.

“Arrests were made in two of these cases and investigations into the others still continue,” said Skwambane.
He also urged the community to invest in the security of their homes by installing burglar doors and windows. He also urged house and property owners to ensure that the entrance of their houses and business are fully visible and remove any obstacles that might be used as hiding place for criminals.
Neighbours were also urged to watch over one another’s properties.
