MAYFLOWER – A 40-year-old woman was charged with assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm after allegedly assaulting his grandson with an axe on February 14.

The grade 1 learner was found loitering on the streets wearing school uniform after school. A concerned passerby identified the school uniform and accompanied the learner back to school where he slept for the night in one of the classrooms. According to police, one of the teachers was found locking classrooms on the day. The teacher questioned the learner to find out the reason why he was not at home. The boy responded by saying he was being abused and assaulted by his grandmother. The teacher then called the police to report the matter.

“We discovered that he sustained severe bruises all over the body. A case of Assault with an intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm was opened against the 40-year-old woman,” said the police in a statement. Further investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly assaulted with an axe and was afraid to go back home.

“The boy was shaking and hysterical. He also complained of pains and was unable to walk properly. He was also late at school that morning which suggest that he struggled to walk to school because of the injuries. He was then taken to Mayflower Clinic and was transferred to Embhuleni Hospital for further medical attention. Social Workers were notified about the incident. After discharge from the hospital, the victim will be placed at a temporary place of safety where he will be under the supervision of the social workers,” the police added.

A docket was opened and taken to Elukwatini Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) who arrested the woman and appeared at the Mayflower Periodical Court yesterday. The suspect was released on R500 bail and the case was postponed to March 30 for further investigation.
