SAPS arrest officials who take their share from heist

The three suspects were among eight police officials who were the first to arrive at the crime scene.

Three police officers have been arrested in connection with stealing money from a cash-in-transit heist crime scene.

A 52-year-old warrant officer, 31-year-old constable and a 38-year-old reserve constable appeared in the Mhala Magistrate’s Court today on charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

The court outcome was not known at the time of publishing this article.

This comes after they allegedly stole money following a cash-in-transit heist that happened at Saselani and Buyisonto, near Bushbuckridge, on Thursday at about 14:00.

It is alleged that a G4S armored vehicle heading towards Bushbuckridge from Thulamahashe was attacked by a group of armed men travelling in two bakkies. The robbers forced the security guards to stop by firing shots at them. The guards were disarmed, forced out of their vehicle and the robbers then blast the safe open. They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, leaving some money scattered at the scene.

“When other SAPS members arrived they were informed by members of the community that they saw some police officers who arrived earlier taking money before leaving the scene,” explained Bhembe.

“The police were called and were ordered to stop right where they were,” added Bhembe.
“They were searched and some were found to be in possession of notes suspected to have been taken from the crime scene,” he added.
Anyone with information that may assist police in their investigation is urged to contact Lt Col Nomsa Mkhwanazi on 082-469-1250 or the SAPS crime-stop number on 08600-10111.
