Officer injured in CIT heist recovering in hospital

The officer is not linked to the crime, however, investigations are still under way as to how he was injured.

The police officer from the Komatipoort station who was injured during the cash-in-transit heist on Wednesday is still in hospital.

The officer who was driving an unmarked police vehicle was shot in his foot on April 4. The incident took place on the road near the University of Mpumalanga.

“At this stage, the police are probing how the officer travelling in a state vehicle got shot within the vicinity of the crime scene,” said Brig Leonard Hlathi.

The suspects who robbed the SBV van of an undisclosed amount of cash have not been arrested. One suspect who was wearing a bullet-resistant vest believed to be belonging to SAPS, was killed when security guards retaliated to gun shots fired by the robbers. Other suspects fled the scene in different cars.

Police recovered four firearms – two AK 47 rifles, a R5 rifle, a 9mm pistol, a second bullet-resistant vest – and a balaclava on the scene.

The firearms had been sent for ballistic testing.
