Six suspects arrested for farmer’s murder

The five men were found in possession of some of the items which were robbed from the victims such as TV set, hand guns, rifle and ammunition at Embalenhle. The woman was found at Emzinoni in possession of the victim’s cellphone.

A female is among the six suspects arrested for a house robbery and the murder of a 73-year-old pensioner from Charl Cilliers, near Secunda.

The suspects, aged between 35 and 39 years are expected to appear before the Evander Magistrate’s Court today.

They face charges of murder, house robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of stolen property.

According to police, the six were traced and arrested in different areas between Embalenhle and Emzinoni after police acted swiftly on information received regarding their whereabouts.

This comes after three armed men shot the pensioner in his bedroom after gaining entry into his house through the door.

The pensioner was found watching television with his family on February 16 at around 22:30.
“They demanded keys to the safe and took the elderly man to the bedroom where the safe was mounted and in the process, they shot him,” said Brig Leonard Hlathi.

“The suspects then opened the safe, stole three firearms, a .287 magnum revolver, a .306 hunting rifle a .303 rifle as well as jewellery, a TV set and money,” he added.

They fled the scene using the family’s white Ford Ranger which was parked outside. They reportedly shot and killed two dogs which were in the house before fleeing.

Police were informed and they launched a manhunt which resulted in the arrest of the suspects.

The stolen vehicle was found burnt also at Emzinoni.
