Accused gets 25 years for assault and rape

Mr Richard Tsipi (30) from Backdoor Trust was sentenced by the Nelspruit Regional Court on January 29.

A man was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment on charges of assault with intent of causing grievous bodily harm and raping a 12 year old minor.

In the first charge, court papers revealed that, on October 10, 2015, an argument ensued between Tsipi and the victim. Tsipi then tied her to the bed with electrical cords, assaulted her numerous times with open hands and closed fists, as well as with a slasher all over her body. The victim eventually escaped and was taken to the hospital.

Futhermore, on November 12, 2010 the accused raped a family member who resided with him more than once. The victim managed to run away and reported him to neighbours who took her to her family and the incident was reported to the police.

Tsipi was arrested later that month but absconded and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was subsequently re-arrested in November 2015 and his bail was opposed. The two dockets were joined together

The regional court prosecutor, Mr Thulani Msibi led with evidence from the victims, eyewitnesses and medical reports. The state further argued that a minimum sentence be imposed.

Tsipi was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the charges of assault (GBH) and a further 20 years for rape. His name was entered into the Sexual Offences Register.

He was previously declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The provincial NPA spokesperson Ms Monica Nyuswa said the sentence was welcomed with the hope that victims will find solace and restore confidence in the criminal justice system.
