Principal released on R10 000 bail

The principal accused of raping and impregnating a learner from Piet Retief in 2014 was released on R10 000 bail yesterday.

The principal, who is also a well known pastor in the area, was granted bail during his third court appearance at the Mahamba Periodic Court in Piet Retief yesterday.

The matter was postponed to January 17, 2018 for further investigation.
According to Ms Monica Nyuswa, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), reasons supplied in court during the accused’s bail application is that he is not a threat to witnesses as he knew about the allegations even before a docket was opened and is not a threat to any of the witnesses.

“He is not a violent person by nature. He was arrested at his home and he is not a flight risk. He does not have previous convictions or pending cases, he is already suspended from work and definitely not a threat to the safety of the complainants,” she said.

The court released him on the following bail condition; he is not supposed to go near the school where the incident took place he is not to contact the witnesses. He is also not supposed to go to his church as the complainant and some of the witnesses attend the same church. The teacher is also not allowed to leave his house for more than two hours without reporting to the investigating officer or clerk of the court. His bail condition also demands him to hand in his passport to the investigating officer.
